Outreach Ambassador Position Description
Do you find joy in helping others walk, bike, ride the bus, and carpool? Are you an invested and involved community member of Austin and familiar with the Zilker, Bouldin, and Travis Heights neighborhoods?
The City of Austin and Capital Metro have partnered to bring the Smart Trips: Austin program to these
three neighborhoods from October 2017 to January 2018. The program will help residents explore
healthy and sustainable transportation options through fun events like walking, biking, and transit tours,
personalized messaging and communications, and tools and resources. Smart Trips: Austin is hiring
three full-time, temporary outreach ambassadors to conduct community outreach and administrative
tasks for the program. The outreach ambassadors will be hired and managed by Bike Austin.
The goals of the program are to:
 Decrease single occupancy vehicle trips by 5‐10% among participants in the priority community.
 Increase trips made by walking, bicycling, riding transit, and carpooling by 5‐10% in the priority
Duties and Responsibilities
As the public face of the program, the outreach ambassadors will be responsible for inviting residents of the Zilker, Bouldin, and Travis Heights neighborhoods to sign up to receive a toolkit of transportation
tools and resources like maps, bus schedules, and safety tips. The ambassadors will assemble the
toolkits and deliver them to participants’ doorsteps by foot, bike, or bus. Ambassadors will also plan and
lead program events; answer questions about transportation; write communications and post on social
media; and identify opportunities for outreach and partnership.
As a member of the Smart Trips: Austin project team, Bike Austin will oversee the outreach
ambassadors’ day-to- day tasks and the ambassadors will have office space at Bike Austin. Ideal
candidates are self-starters who can work independently and as a team. Candidates should have a
strong desire to help their fellow neighbors try transportation options. They should be approachable,
reliable, and organized. Ambassadors will work 40 hours per week (including some weekends and
evenings) both indoors and outdoors (in any weather) from October to January. Approximately 60% of
time will be spent on office tasks and 40% on outreach and events.

The Smart Trips: Austin outreach ambassadors will have these duties:
 Assemble packets of transportation materials at the Bike Austin office (in Downtown
Austin), including organizing orders, data entry, and other administrative and promotional tasks; Deliver packets to households in the Zilker, Bouldin, and Travis Heights neighborhoods from the Bike Austin office by foot, bike, and/or bus; Appear at neighborhood events like farmers’ markets, street festivals, and other public events to promote the Smart Trips: Austin program, invite residents to participate, answer questions about transportation options, and distribute transportation information;
 Lead and/or staff events, workshops, and presentations in formal and informal settings;

Outreach Ambassador Position Description
 Work with and schedule tabling opportunities for Smart Trips: Austin with community
groups, business associations, and other organizations and agencies;  Work sites will include the Bike Austin office, public parks, community organizations, and other public events in the neighborhoods;
 While on duty, wear a Smart Trips: Austin uniform (t-shirt provided by the program) and a
bicycling helmet when bicycling to and from events and while delivering packets; and
 Represent the City of Austin and Capital Metro and the Smart Trips: Austin program in a
positive, responsible, and professional way.

Required Qualifications
Candidates must possess the following qualifications:
 Comfortable speaking with the public and can communicate effectively with all types of people
 Works well in an unstructured and informal environment, with limited supervision
 Works well in a team, and fosters team spirit
 Prompt, punctual, and reliable
 Good at solving problems, thinking creatively, and self-motivation
 Experience with public outreach initiatives
 Enthusiasm about transportation options and helping members of the public
 Familiarity with, and personal experience using, transportation options that serve the target
neighborhoods, including walking, bicycling, transit, bikeshare, and carshare.
 Proficient with Microsoft Office applications and basic data entry and email
 Able to lift up to 35 pounds, and able to work outdoors all day and in any weather

Preferred Qualifications
 Resident of or strong familiarity with and involvement in Zilker, Bouldin, or Travis Heights
 Experienced in bicycling in urban traffic, owns a bicycle in good working condition and
an approved bicycling helmet which must be worn while on the job
 Bicycle mechanic skills, desirable
 Bilingual in English and Spanish (or some other language spoken in the community), desirable
 Ownership or access to a smart phone

Basic Details
 Start Date: September 2016
 Duration: Approx. September 25 to January 26
 Compensation: $18.00 – $20.00 DOE
 Hours vary based on project timeline: Full time (40 hours/week including weekends) for
September through January
