Tell us a little about why you’re a bicycle-supporting business and a about your business, in general.
Most importantly, I love bicycling. It has been a very important part of my personal and professional life for over 25 years. It has been the source of “therapy,” exercise, and just plain fun. Because of all these experiences and benefits, it is hard NOT to be somewhat of an evangelist for this wonderful form of activity. On the business side, we believe in improving the experience on the bike during the hot summer months by providing a very easy to use and highly effective way to keep cyclist dramatically cooler. It adds so much to the enjoyment of riding. We conducted a scientific study to demonstrate the benefits of staying cooler on the bike, and it was presented at the American College of Sports Medicine annual conference in 2015.
Why did you decide to become a Bike Austin small business member?
A few years ago, I spent a considerable amount of time in Austin working with my brother Paul Carrozza. During that time I fell in love with how ACTIVE the Austin community is. I also had the chance to meet several great people and athletes. I believe that as Bike Austin improves the access and safety of the bike infrastructure around the city, you will want to see as many people riding as possible. Spruzza—by keeping riders significantly cooler—will allow more people to enjoy riding more often during Austin’s hot summer months. What is Spruzza? Spruzza is an on-board cooling system that attaches quickly and easily to your bike. Spruzza “air-conditions” by allowing you to spray just enough water to cover and cool your head, face and neck.
What benefits or positive outcomes do you hope to enjoy as a Bike Austin small business member?
I am confident that Spruzza can improve the experience of cycling in hot weather much like air conditioning in our cars improve the experience of driving a car. Even for those “hard core” riders who emphatically state that “the heat doesn’t bother me”. They still use A/C when driving. The heat does affect us all. If we are able to “move the needle” getting more people on bikes more often, we will have accomplished our mission.
Why do you think Bike Austin is important to the Austin cycling community (and/or small business community)?
We have supported a number of bike advocacy organizations over the last couple of years since starting Spruzza. The reasons are many. Bicycling is one of the best ways to get and keep moving. It is enjoyable, healthy, provides significant economic benefits to communities, creates compelling meaningful social networks, and generally improves the vitality of any municipality. Organizations like BIKE AUSTIN are critical for raising awareness of all these factors, having influence on civic planning, safety, and improving the EASE and ACCESS to safe biking trails, paths, and lanes.
Why/how do you think donations are important to Bike Austin’s Advocacy Fund and education programs?
Donations and donors are important for much more than just the money. The right network of strategic supporters creates an awareness and appearance of the significance cycling plays in any community. This network can develop an “ecosystem” of support out of which emerges benefits and influence far beyond the sum of its parts.
Anything personalized or fun about your experience as cyclists/small business owners and why Bike Austin has made this more possible, empowering, safe, groovy, etc.
Designing, developing, testing and marketing a brand new product into the bike community has been a tremendous amount of work and fun. I have met some amazing cyclists along the way. Currently, we are working with some professional cyclists, coaches, and trainers as we continue to explore and document the benefits of sustainable cooling on performance, endurance, fatigue and recovery. And, oh yeah, cooling down feels fantastic every time.
