When and why did you decide to become a Bike Austin member?

I have to admit I had not been involved in any cycling community service or advocacy for a few years, and I wanted to get back into it. I moved to Austin last July, and not long after, I attended a Bike Austin fundraiser event over the summer.  I met a bunch of Bike Austin folks (including the Mayor!!), learned about what the initiatives were/are for the program, and I was in!

What benefits or positive outcomes have you enjoyed as a Bike Austin member?

Primarily, meeting people! Being relatively new in town, it’s been a great way to meet other folks with a common interest.
Why is Bike Austin important to the Austin cycling community?

I think that Bike Austin is important to the cycling community as a whole because of their facilitation of improvements to the streets (whether that be infrastructure, or the indirect effect of increased safety from increased awareness) that we all ride on, regardless of the goal or reason: commuting to work, running errands, leisurely riding, or getting out of town for a long training ride.

Why/how are donations important to Bike Austin’s Advocacy Fund and education programs?

These donations are essential for maintaining and improving our cycling experience by enabling the staff to increase awareness of cyclists on the road, either by signage, education programs, or other means.

Anything personalized or fun about your experience as a cyclist and why Bike Austin has made this more possible, empowering, safe, groovy, etc.
I have been riding my bike to school/work for about 10 years, in several cities in three states.  I am super happy that here in Austin, I have a bike lane for the entirety of the roughly 10 miles I ride from my house to work, including multiple routes. Actually, that’s pretty true of any destination about that distance from my house — I even ride in bike lanes and on a bike path to race my bike on Thursday nights at the Driveway Criterium Series.  There are areas that could be improved, but I am also stoked that as this city is growing, the cycling community and its supporters and working hard to grow and improve at a matched pace.
